10th Annual Chapter #12 Christmas Party |
|
Once again,
H. G. McCully Chapter #12 held their annual Christmas Party for Special
Children. 75 children, along with their chaperones, were invited
to the Brownstone House in Paterson for dinner, dancing, face painting
and an afternoon of fun. Party coordinator, Tina Callahan, and her
band of elves have been working all year to make the party a huge
success. A golf tournament was held in July to help with the
expenses. Santa, Mrs. Claus and some elves was the hit of the
party. Each child, and some adults, had a chance to sit with Santa
and tell him all their wishes for this Christmas. Everyone
received a special Christmas stocking and a day full of fun! |

Dear Hackensack-Englewood-Hudson Council Members,
Last year, you received a letter advising that the
Council had no members in line to assume the leadership positions
necessary to continue as an active Council within the McCully Upstate
Chapter. We were looking for a few dedicated members to step up and
volunteer to become leaders of the Council.
A few members did step forward and, while they are to
be commended for their efforts for continuing the Council through 2007,
there just were not enough volunteers to sustain the Council through
2008.
Therefore, at the October 24, 2007 Chapter Executive
Board meeting, a motion was made and passed that the
Hackensack-Englewood-Hudson Council be disbanded effective January 1,
2008.
As a Hackensack-Englewood-Hudson member, you will now
be given to opportunity to affiliate with another Council. Your choices
are:
Essex
Morristown
Newark
Paterson-Passaic-Ridgewood
Please complete the following information and return it by
December, 15, 2007.
Please note that if we do not hear from you, a Council will be
assigned.

Paint Playground Map |
|
The
Hackensack-Englewood-Hudson Council and Life Member Club teamed up on
June 20 to paint a playground map at he Horace B. Mann School in
Bayonne, New Jersey. The painters, led by Life Member Dan Paken,
five volunteers from the Council and ten volunteers from the school's
PTA spent the day painting and learning some geography. Dan is a
former Council, Club, and Chapter President. All of the volunteers
had a great time and shared some great fellowship. |

Morristown Council Sends Hug-A-Bears to
Iraq |
|
Below is a letter from a soldier in
Iraq. He has been receiving Hug-A-Bears from the Morristown
Council and distributing them to the children of Iraq.
Greetings from the desert.
I talked to my folks and they gave
me your email address. I wanted to find out the name and address from
the lady that sent the bears. I know that she wanted a picture of them
being handed out but that will not be possible. I have them here with me
and the base I'm at doesn't have any troops that make contact with the
locals. What I have been doing with them is putting them to good use on
medevac flights. My medics hand them out when we pick up Iraqi children
that are wounded. It is very sad to have to do it but we help them get
the care they need when they are caught in battles. Unfortunately we
can't take photos of the bears being given out. When the medics have a
child on board they put the bear in their arms if there unconscious so
when they wake they have them. If they are conscious they just give it
to them. This make them feel a little less scared of us. If you give me
her address or your address I can send her a certificate of thanks to
recognize her. I have enough bears to hand out and I'm still trying to
get with combat units that my deal with the orphanages or come into
contact with other kids. I hope she will understand that even though
there not getting handed out on the streets the kids that get them from
us need them the most. Things are going well here. We just found out
that our unit has been extended to 15 months so we will be here till
Dec. Hope all is well in NJ.
Tom

A Young Pioneer |
| |
|
The photo below is a picture of 8 year old
Sebastian Cross with some of the items he collected. Sebastian is the
son of a Pioneer who works in the NOC is Madsion, NJ. For Sebastian's
8th birthday he requested that his friends and family give him items for our
troops stationed in Afghanistan and Iraq. His father did not know how
to get the items to the troops. He saw a Pioneer bulletin with the
name of Lauren Cucuzza, Past President of the Paterson-Passaic-Ridgewood
Council, and called her to see if the Council could help him. Of
course Lauren and the Council offered to ship the items for Sebastian.
The Council has been shipping items to the troops for the past 2 years.
Sebastian gave the Council about 100 pounds of items for the troops.
Each gift was given in a shoebox with a note from the person donating the
gift. The notes expressed our thanks for protecting our country.
PPR's community service chairs shipped the 20 shoeboxes to the troops.
A special thanks goes out to a very special person, Sebastian Cross! |

Hackensack-Englewood-Hudson Council
Sponsors an
Environmental Essay Contest |
|
|
|
The
Hackensack-Englewood-Hudson Council proudly awarded two students from
the Robert Waters Public School in Union City for their participation in
the Environmental Essay Contest. Council member Estrella Gonzalez
presented Jesus Sanchez and Ian Martinez with certificates of
recognition along with $25.00 in Geoffrey Money on May 19, 2006.
It was a difficult decision for the Council to choose from the 20 essays
that were submitted. The students did a great job in the essays
explaining how they would help clean up the environment and also to
educate others on the importance of recycling. |

Joan Dinger
Inducted into the Pioneer Hall of Fame |
|
Soon after Joan joined the Pioneers in 1991, she became council historian.
She has served as council member at large and Warren Life Member Club
president. As the project chair for Be-My-Baby, she purchases baby items and
assembles and delivers the baskets to the hospital each month. Joan
developed the Book Mark Project, designed the bookmarks and purchased a
laminating machine for the Life Member Club. Joan signs new members and
explains the benefits of Pioneering to these new recruits. She leads
workshops at various chapter locations teaching others how to do projects
and enlists partners to crochet baby blankets and sew Hug-A-Bears. Prior to
retiring, Joan was the coordinator for the council vendor program at various
building locations raising over $15,000. She was recognized by the
Morristown Council and the Warren Life Member Club as Pioneer of the Year.
Joan received letters of recognition and a commendation from Norwescap for
her participation as a driver for Meals on Wheels, the Meals at Home
program, and her contributions to the Friendly Visitor Program. During the
holidays Joan shops for toys for 45-50 children of the Collinsville Daycare
center. Joan and her partner Harry have participated in major renovation and
restoration projects undertaken at Historic Speedwell Village.
